Warm up the muscles, so you don't end up pulling one and being unable to use it for 6/8 weeks!!!! :D

Before a workout (after mobility and pulse raising) to help prepare the body for the exercise you are about to do. Some people thing stretching before working out isn't necessary (just the warm up mobility and pulse raising) but i think it's worth having a short all over stretch if you have been sitting still most of the day.

After working out and warming down, stretching returns the muscle to its normal length as they have been shortened by the exercise. It also increases the range of movement that your muscle is effective through. Never stretch cold muscles! Ineffective at best, damaging at worst.

Thru stretching we stimulate our joints to release synovial fliud--(its a lubricant to your joints) just imagine your joints frictioning without lubricant its a real turtore, you may not experience it for now but in the future (when the protectant of your joints worn out) you may. Synovial fluid will release only when you move or stretch.
