Some anthropologists have argued that there are only four or five main races and everything else is a subset of those. The answer to your question depends on how you define the word "race."
Here is one website I found dealing with the definition and categories of race. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Race_(historical_definitions) I have only skimmed over it. It offers a history of how race was defined. It doesn't look comprehensive, but it is a starting point with a list of sources at the end.

That's a good question. I believe that there are over one hundred sub races. We were all one race at one point. Some have either died off or intermixed with other races, like the Anglos and the Saxons.

As I understand it, anthropology is moving away (at least cultural anthropology) from the concept of race altogether. There are no "races," only traits.
