This is an example of the Jackson Pollock activity:

Something I always enjoyed as a kid was word drawing! You wouldn't draw the word "scared" the same way you would draw the word "nice" or "fun". This activity isn't all that messy (depending on the medium), but it really encourages the kids to think like an illustrator. Tell them to go all out and draw the word how it sounds! I found an example of this one as well...just click the link below!:

For the older children, something else that might be fun is to replicate a famous painting. Either allow them to choose and work separately or vote on a painting if it will be a big group project. Let their imaginations run wild. If they can't all agree on one piece, assign them one! Let them use mediums such as acrylic paint, tempera, chalk, crayons, and colored pencils.

Hope I helped...good luck and most importantly...HAVE FUN!

Writing... modern style! *thunders*

Besides that, you could make them dance while balancing a can of paint with their little heads.

Don't try this with newborns.

When I was little what I enjoyed the most was making clay figures. But small children could eat the clay, which would not be good. And if you do the paper thing, don't leave scissors near kids! (obviously)

I would go for finger-painting then, but it should be food-based-painting cuz they're gonna eat it anyways.

One fun thing you could try is Culinary Arts (cooking)

Bye!!

Paper mache immediately comes to mind! Paper, glue, flour and water -- the kids get to learn sculpting techniques AND make a big mess!

Fabric dyeing (like tye-dye or batik) is also a great to go, and kids can learn about color mixing/theory. (see link below)

When I worked at a day camp with kids, I made masks with them, using objects from nature, various craft supplies (foam, feathers, etc), and basically anything I could think of. I had the kids use plaster bandages (cheaply available from either craft stores or medical supply places). You cut the bandages into strips, dip them in water and then can drape them on the face, carefully avoiding the eyes and hairlines. They dry enough to remove in about 3 minutes. I helps to put a litte Vaseline on your face to help keep the plaster from sticking. Once completely dry (in about 24 hours) they can be paitning, decorated etc. (See link below about masks and also some famous artists who made them)

Good luck!

This is so fabulous of you.

Paper mache is messy and fun.

Finger painting is messy and fun.

Clay is messy and fun.

Water color is messy and fun.

I think you are on the right track.

Why not just bring a variety of mediums into the class and just see what the kids produce?

That's messy and fun.

Fingerpainting: you can use 'just paint', paint powder sprinkled on petroleum jelly that has been spread on paper, then "mix" it together, then "paint" somemore; shaving cream can be used that way, too, and if you have a "nasty table, paint right on it and the Shaving creme will clean it right up! Having the kids make their own fingerpaint is fun too. Lots of recipes on early childhood sites.
