applying an icepack to it will help reduce swelling.

take motrin or tylenol (motrin works best b/c it also has an anti-inflammatory in it to help reduce swelling)

for motrin: take 200-400mg every 6-8 hours. MAX DOSE is 1200mg every 24 hours-do not take more than this.

you can alternate the motrin with tylenol if the motrin is not helping. take the motrin then take tylenol in 4 hours ( 200-350mg) if not working.
max dose for tylenol is 1000mg every 24 hours.

if the swelling does not go down in the next two-three days OR gets worse in the next day or two or you are unable to bend your finger-make an appointment with your doctor or report to the emergency room-there is a chance you might have broken it with these symptoms

If it's bleeding
thats the first thing u need 2 sort out. If it's bleeding bad cover ur finger with a towle or something and keep ur hand above ur heart as this will slow bleeding. If ur not bleeding put it under cold running water for 5 r 10mins as this will help numb the pain and stop in it swelling.

If you rub or press on the hurting area, it will stimulate the short nerve fibres, thereby interfering with the transmission of the pain signal to the brain. Alternatively, you could just wait for the pain to go away by itself. On the other hand, it may be broken, in which case this prob. won't work, and you'd need to take some pain relief. Should also put ice on it to prevent swelling and will also numb the pain.

Is there a cut on your finger?..does your finger look deformed (like it may be broken?)..in both cases you need to see a doctor..but right now hold your finger above your heart which will reduce the circulation and throbbing in your finger..you can try some (TYLENOL OR IBUPROFEN) make sure you are not allergic to any of those mediation's...you may need to have someone look at it and do a xray...

Put ice or an ice pack all around it. It will numb it.

Then try to wiggle it. If it does not wiggle at all, you may want to get it x-rayed for a fracture. If it hurts to wiggle, it may just be swelling fast. The ice should help that too.

Wrap it in ice. If there is unusual swelling, or the pain does not subside after a reasonable amount of time, you should get it checked out as there is a possibility you may have broken it.
