Apparently Grimace was orginally an evil character that stole drinks.
He orginally had 4 arms so he could grab more beverages but after the forst commercial campaign with the evil 4 armed Grimace they decided to make him a "good guy" and took away the extra two arms and made him more of teh comic releif (the clumsy goofy guy)

I think he is just kinda the heavy set comic relief. As to the name...hmm not sure on that one.
As a note to the one who said he steals hamburgers:
That would be the Hamburglar-the short guy with buck teeth and the striped jail suit. Grimace is the friendly, kinda slow purple one.

he steals hamburgers every great story needs a vilian at he is maccas he has to show the little kiddies "what not too do"so that ronald can say like no grimise look before you cross the road so you dont get hit by a car and so on.
