The most effective way of looking for work is by using your network of friends and relatives.
These people know you well, and have a vested interest in keeping you employed.
In turn, their employers and friends, will trust people they refer to them. Making it easier for them to hire you quickly.
There is no headhunter, no job site, no recruiter, no format of resume, that can possibly compete with your network of trusted friends and relatives.
So you might want to sign up (and if you are already in sign in) to any of the social networks like MySpace, Friendster, and most importantly LinkedIn (like myspace but for professionals). Those networks alone will most likely land you a job very quickly.
I use this method recently and it beats turning over your resume to any headhunter or job site.
Good luck

Steps to getting a job (that you actually want)
1. Prepare resume- you can scan the internet, and use your freinds to help you build a decent looking resume with a cover letter
2. Apply to job- have resume with cover letter in hand
3. This seems almost needless to say but dress like you will be interviewed for the job when you apply.
4. Make a follow up phone call - but no more than once a week. You want to show that you are persistent but not annoying.
5. Find out if any of your friends or relatives can help you out-its called networking.
6. If it is a new career path for you than make sure you do your homework before the interview. research the skills and educational background that employers are looking for.

Well, apart from applying for ads in the newspapers and local magazines and frequenting the employment agencies; I took on a few additional courses, specifically in computers and got myself enrolled in some career oriented schools.
I also got a new CV done professionally, rather than improvizing the last one, added my newly begun courses on them; and when the interview calls started coming, just told my employers, how much interested i was in advancing my skills and how career oriented i was; not only did i get the job of my dreams, but also sponserships on some of my certificate courses

I was out of a job by choice. I knew I wanted a career change, so I made sure I was financially ready. About the only thing I did differently was to get educated in the field that interested me, that way you are smarter than the average bear, (as Yogi would say).

Specifically:
1. Told family and friends I was out of work to have them keep a lookout for jobs
2. Signed up for daily alerts for Monster, Careerbuilder, Hotjobs, Job Animal, PC Scout
3. Applied at places outside of my normal job scope to broaden chances of getting hired
Nothing unusual for me.

No big problem...
I bought the Sunday local newspaper...
I circle all possibilities (with or without experience)
Called the most possible first...
Got an appointment for the same afternoon
Went to meet the guy...(no resume in hand)
Filled their application
Got interviewed on the spot
Got the job on the spot
Started working 2 days later...
Show enthousiasm... and... keep it simple... it works.....

I'm not going to make up a pretentious list....because it is stupid and makes me feel patronising (like talking slow to an Asian)
I simply went out and looked for a job, and had numerous offers by the next week...after interviews of course.
