Yankee Doodle went to town ridding on a pony, stuck a feather in his hat and called it macaroni...

At the time, the term "macaroni" referred to a useless decoration on an item of dress. Hence, the feathers was "macaroni".

When he combined the feather with the hat....that made the two of them Macaroni. You know....kinda like macaroni salad.
