Then, as it is now, it depended on the car. A Henry J with a 4 cylinder engine would get around 30 MPG. A Chrysler 300 with two four barrel carbs would get around 10 MPG. Earlier 50's cars got better mileage than late 50's cars because the car companies started replacing their 6 cylinder engines with V8s. Horsepower started climbing after 1955 and people didn't worry about gas mileage very much until the early 60s.

Consumption shud not be too high or too low as technology was not so developed to increase fuel economy and cars were not so sophisticated to have a high consumption.

V8's were 7 to 10 mpg.
