In the twilight hours outside of Perth the kangaroos can be as dangerous as a deer or moose in the northern US and Canada. As a matter of fact, if you are renting a car, there will be a clause attached that says that you are responsible if you hit a kangaroo (or if anything falls on the car like a rock or boulder). We saw lots of kangaroos as we were driving in various parts of Australia.

In the country you might see kangaroos especially dead ones on the side of the road.

In the night time you will see plenty of kangaroos travelling the same speed as a car. You will have to travel out of the capital cities to see them. As I live 300 miles west of Sydney in Dubbo when we travel at night west of Dubbo to Bourke and Broken Hill you will come across hundreds if not thousands of them.
In daylight hours you will see them anytime in Central Australia from Dubbo out west to what is known as the outback.

It depends when and where you are driving. Contrary to common overseas belief, you wont see many kangroos hopping around city and suburbs. But if you go into country areas, you have to watch out for them on the roads, especially at dusk and night time. That is why many country cars have "roos bars" at the front, to minimize damage when you hit one or two....

Anywhere mildly close to civilisation ... generally not.
In that case, you might have to try an open range zoo.
In the country...of course! Being that you are there at the right time.
