Peat moss is typically an acidic organic material that can be used as a soil additive. I understand that there are some forms of alkaline peat moss, though I have never encountered them.
Peat moss can be used straight in order to plant acid loving plants like rhododendrons. You must make sure that the peat moss is not dry when you use it. It gets very water repellent when allowed to dry.
Some azalea camellia mixes are better than using pure peat moss. This is because the bag is pre moistened, and is ready to be a good draining acidic mix. The bales of peat ( typically in compressed bales of 1, 2, or 3 cubic foot sizes ) , are almost always dry, and require saturation of water before you use it.

It's a stringy, fuzzy dirt like substance made from dead mosses.
You can use it in mulch, or potting soil. It has lots of organic matter that the plants will use to grow, and it holds lots of water.
You can also put it in a filter media bag, and put it in you aquarium to make the water more acidic, and give it a tea coloration.
Another use is to soak it in water, tne remove it, and boil off most of the water. You'll then have a lot of tannic acid, which is good for turning dead animal skins into leather.
OR, you can burn it like coal... but it gives off a lot of carbon monoxide, which leads to brain damage for serious users.
Additionally, you can get peat moss granules, and make faux coffee grinds, or tea bags to give people you don't like a nasty surprise.

Peat moss comes from peat bogs. It is a nonrenewable resource, so people in the horticulture industry are trying to come up with alternate materials to use in its place.
