black is a relative term.

What Columbus describes as black may not be your idea of black.

Darker than himself? probably.
African? unlikely.

There is some confusion surrounding the origins of the Olmec people of Central America, with a small non professional group positting an African Origin for them.

This stems from the discovery of the "Olmec Heads" giant stone head statues some measuring upto 10 feet in diameter. the figures look *******, but are more likely representations of local Meso Americans.

Regardless, the Olmecs as a culture were gone a thousand years before Columbus.

Check your source.
