Edward VII became king when Victoria died. He ascended the throne at the age of 60 as Victoria was 82 when she died. Edward was affectionately known as 'Bertie' by the family who were all Germans of the Saxe-Coburg Gotha line. Edward was always disappointed that his mother lived so long as he wanted to be king at a younger age and only reigned until 1910 when he died. He is remembered mainly as a philanderer and womaniser and who used to frequent several seedy gambling houses and other such inappropriate places when younger running up vast gambling debts and bedding as many women as he could. His most famous quote is probably the one he came out with when he noticed that flags were being flown at half mast on the death of his mother, Queen Victoria.
"Why are all the flags at half-mast?" He enquired.
"Because the queen is dead your Majesty." Came the answer.
"Yes, but the king is alive." He replied. "Up with the flags."

Edward. His real name was Albert, but after Victoria's husband, Prince Albert, died, she asked that no king of England be named that. He honored her request.
