Sean, as others have said, the Braille system was devised in 1821 by Louis Braille. Others have helped developed it since, and developments such as Braille writers have also helped. You should be aware of Moon, which is an alternative system which is used more by people who have lost sight in adulthood. Moon symbols are more like the letters they describe.
