Yes it is more than likley your alternator. There is a tensioner pully on for your serpentine belt that you need to depress with using a 3/8 drive ratchet then you can remove your belt. Before you do that though disconnect the battery. Take the alternator bolts loose and whatever wires that are on the back of the alternator. Take the alternator to your local parts store and have it tested. They will usually do that for free. If it is bad then give them your old alternator as a core. It is really a pretty easy job swapping an alternator out on your particular vehicle. Your battery will still be dead so you will probably need to jumpstart it again.

From your description I would say yes it sounds like an alternator problem. In order to remove the old one you need to loosen the belt tensioner which is below the alternator and then the bolts holding the alt. to the mounting bracket and then of course the wiring.(I always remove a battery cable so as not to have a hot wire that could arc or spark against something and blow a fuse or worse LOL) Then replace the alternator with a new or rebuilt one (I would go with a good rebuilt) reattach the wires and everything you unhooked and start and check to make sure it charges OK. Also if possible and you have a battery charger of some type at home it,s a good idea to replenish your battery to a good state of charge this way as opposed to expecting the new alternator to do all the work.As a long time mechanic I can tell you this is hard on an alternator and could shorten it,s life in my opinion anyway. Good luck.

i have read the other answers and i have to disagree. you likely have a bad battery. the reason you car died is becouse you computer needs to read at least 12v at start up or it will not know how to idle. you would think that it would read 12v with the cables on but some how the computer knows the differance. well anyway the battery is the cheapist fix.charge the battery all night and have it checked at your local auto parts store in the morning.
