I feel really sad and proud at the same time when I hear the national anthem being played. It is such a powerful anthem and so much history is wrapped inside the words. You have to shed a tear.
I'm really glad for my family to have come to Korea, but my heart is in SA. And I know they wanna stay, so I keep my feelings to myself when I hear the anthem. When I watch a rugby match, I always use the excuse that the game is about to start and I need to smoke. Don't smoke in the house, you see. But outside all the good memories start to well up inside and you feel weak in the knees.
Didn't know the anthem would ever affect me as much. I didn't like it at first and even wrote a paper for "Inheemse Reg" that it should be rewritten. This was at university.
It always reminds me of the powerful voices that sang the anthem in Pretoria when Mbeki became president. Planes flying right by my window.....
There is a great drummer's version of the anthem on limewire. It doesn't say who the artist is or who the drummers are, but if you have time...download it. There are just a few, so you won't have any problem finding it on limewire.

i'm quite split in 2. What they did with the national anthem grew to become into great and a good pass to circumvent anger on the two aspects of the fence. yet there'll come a time the place we'd want to re-seem at present one and get an anthem representing all South Africans. A shorter anthem is mandatory i think of. sure i know the words of the anthem.

It makes me cry too. It may sound good but Die Stem is the Anthem of a racist regime & Nkosi Sikelela is the anthem of a Militant Marxist movement. The two of them have now been put together to represent people so complacent and greedy that they can watch their own countrymen kill each other in the streets trying to make a living from crime while their children are at home in the shanty towns dying of AIDS.
A country as beautiful as South Afcrica deserves better
Sorry about the spelling my xhosa & africaans is out of practice

I love the South African Anthem, and think it has a powerful history. I especially like the fact that it is sung in five official languages:
Lord, bless Africa
May her spirit rise high up
Hear thou our prayers
Lord bless us.
Lord, bless Africa
Banish wars and strife
Lord, bless our nation
Of South Africa.
Ringing out from our blue heavens
From our deep seas breaking round
Over everlasting mountains
Where the echoing crags resound ...
Sounds the call to come together,
And united we shall stand,
Let us live and strive for freedom,
In South Africa our land.
(The above translated version is actually sung in a combination of isiXhosa, isiZulu, Sesotho, Afrikaans and English). See the actual version on the website quoted here.

It just makes me think of how great South Africa is, also a tear sometimes. I prefer the old Afrikaans one over the new mixed one, as said above, we deserve better [no racism intended]
