Great question that produced a number of incorrect responses. Onions grow both under and above ground. The bulb of the onion, that part we typically see as the white "ball" grows beneath the soil. The other part of the onion, the leaves, grow above ground. We would refer to them as either green onions or scallions. With the exception of the root fingers attatched to the bulb, the onion is entirely edible, though nutritionally a mess. Onions may be started from little "onion-ettes" (my term) or from seed, which would be produced if the onion leaves were allowed to reach maturity. Once the leave has matured, it will actually produce a small flower, quite pretty and extremely fragrant...unfortunately it smells like its bulb. The tiny purplish seeds come from the flower and can be used to start new seedlings.

Part under part above. You keep the dirt pulled back from about 1/2 way up the onion if you are growing big onions. If you are growing the green stem salad onion then the entire onion can be under ground. m

Green onions on top, the traditional onion under ground. I bend over the green part of my onions to force the growth to go into the bulb part = larger onions.

They grow underground. The part of the onion we eat is actually a "bulb" (like plants). Sometimes you may even find small roots still on some onions.

I believe they grow under the ground, because they can grow leaves, meaning that they are a root.
