DO NOT CUT DOWN A TREE if you do not know what you are doing! Someone could get hurt (most likely you) or property damage should the tree fall on a neighboring house, car, etc.

Assuming the tree is straight and fairly well even branched - on the side of the tree in the direction you want it to fall -cut a notch about half way through. THEN...,

.... on the back side of that notch - cut a straight line just a little above the notch until the tree starts falling.

This is only good if the tree is straight and nothing close by to get smashed should the tree fall too far to the left or right. You have to allow for the direction the tree is leaning and or if the trees branches are more to the left or right of the direction you wish it to fall.

KEEP PEOPLE AWAY FROM THE Direction of the falling tree. Have them stand behind and away from the fall path. If you have a friend who knows about this stuff - I suggest you contact him - WATCH him (or her) cut it down and have him (or her) explain the process.

Its easy stuff - IF - you know what you're doing.

If it's rather big, hire someone. If it's small and there isn't any thing close enough for it to hit, you can do it.

Cut a notch a bit over half way though on the side that is the direction that you want it fall. Then a few inches above on the opposite start cutting at downward angle toward the notch. You won't have to cut all the way though. Be ready to get out of there when it starts to go. You can also use a chain or rope to help it fall in the direction you need. Just make sure it is longer than the height of the tree. And once it starts to fall, get out of the way.

Be careful.

You can do the notching bit, then cut above the notch on the other side..

But if you want a tree to fall in a specific area, then I would tie a large rope to it, or a chain, and get a bunch of your friends to pull it, while you are cutting the back side, (above the notch of course), just to make "sure" that it falls where you want it to do so...

I have even used a truck, with a loooooong rope, and chains to pull trees down in certain directions, because we didnt want it to hit other trees and break them apart, or crush them.

Keep tension on the tree when you start the back cut, and have a walkie talkie and another guy with whom ever is sawing, so that you will stay in touch at all times and know when to "gun it" and start the pull FAST!

Oh, make SURE that the rope is half way up the tree, so that you will get the "heavy part", and direct it from there.

I wish you well..

Depends on the tree. Not all trees are symetrical and like any object there is a point of balance. You need to be very careful, people die from trees falling on them they can be very heavy and awkward things to handle.
You can cut notches and so on but a rope or chain tied high up and someone pulling at the other end is better
Dont forget that with a round shaped tree the trunk will tend to flick up once it has been felled so watch out for any branches coming your way!
PS dont destroy your house in the process..........get a pro in!!

depends on how you cut the trunk. If it is a big tree it will fall in the direction of the weight or the way its leaning. If its a big one get a pro to do it so it doesnt end up on your house. m

I HAVE DONE EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE INTENDING TO DO. IMANAGED TO SAW UP A 24FT PINE TREE ALL BY MYSELF. THE TREE SURGEON WANTED £150 TO DO IT INITIALLY. I FOUND THAT THE TREE FELL TOWARDS THE FIRST CUT, SO IN OTHER WORDS TOWARDS THE SAW AND THEN I HELPED IT TO GO IN THE DIRECTION I WANTED BY PUSHING IT IN THAT DIRECTION AS SOON AS I HEARD THE FIRST CRACK.VERY RISKY AND FRIGHTENING AT THE TIME BUT SAVED ME £150!!

Here's a semi-educated guess. The tree will fall the side closest to the sun due to gravity? I don't really know.
