Two dices are not considered differently (as dice A and dice B) here. So there are can be only 6 single values at the first place. Not 12.

That means; Value 2, Value 3 is equal to the Value 3, Value 2.

Any value of a dice may have any of the possible 6 values from the other dice. So the answer is 6 x 6.

There are 6 sides to a dice, each time you throw, only one side will face up. So, the total outcomes for 2 die thrown is actually (6C1) x (6C1), [where 6C1 means 6 combination 1],

Your other proposed solution 12C2, is used only for situation where there are 12 balls numbered between 1 to 12 in a bag, and drawing 2 balls from the bag, what is total number of possibilities of different combinations there are.

The reason it's 36 is that each die has 6 possibilities, so 6 x 6 = 36. Period.

It can not be your 2nd option because there are not 12 possibilities for any single die. (there are only 6 sides per die, therefore 6 possibilities)

each number on a die get 6 other number combinations to math with.

etc...

if there are 6 on one die and if that die gets 6 with the other one, then 6 * 6 = 36.
