It could be that the doctor is concentrating on the problem of that day, which is not a bad thing to do. When that is getting all settled, ask about the hernia. I am sure he will tell you more. They are common enough in boys, and not that dangerous at all, so that is probably why he mentioned it, but went back to dealing with whatever had him in the hospital.
If you are generally happy with your doctor, I would not worry about going to another to ask about it until you have asked this one about it once the problems you are having are gone. The doctor would have known it was not serious, and probably just didn't want to focus on it rather than the immediate problem. Just ask now.

I suspect that if your son was very ill with some other problem, the finding of the hernia was what we call incidental during the evaluation ...sort of an "oh-by-the way" we found this. The doctor probably felt that treating the "other" problem was the higher priority at the time. Once he is better, you certainly should have the hernia evaluated.
Hope he is feeling better soon.

The only stupid question (especially when in re guards to your children's health and welfare) is and unasked question. If there is any confusion at all as to what or if you should do anything for your child you are obligated to ask. Doctors hear and see it all constantly so they sometimes forget that we don't have the knowledge that they do and therefor they don't explain things to us clearly enough. Ask specific questions and if you still are unsure of the answer ask the doctor to explain it to you again. I would rather look ignorant in the doctors eyes (if thats what is worrying you) than be ignorant to what my kids needs are. Keep asking the questions and you will be doing your child a favor by being informed about his condition and by being prepared to take any necessary steps that may be required to fix it.

A good doctor would give you informative details about any concern of yours regarding your child. If he has not mentioned it any further I would take him to a second doctor for another opinion - take your Xrays with you, its not something you want to wait around to find out.
There have been plenty babies and children born with hernias that have not caused any problems, but it is still something you will want to find out about - for your own peace of mind.

I have had a hernia for years, and it does not bother me at all. My Doctor said that it was my option to have it fixed, but unless it became painful he was not worried about it.

if you have any doubt about the diagnosis then yes get a second opinion, this is your child you can never be to careful,I know this from personal experience( doctor diagnosed a symptom of lymphatic lukemia as a simple rash) on my son, never be afraid or embarressed to ask your childs doctor a question regarding anything. and if the doctor takes offense to getting a second opinion then dump him,his first concern as yours should be the well being of your son
