Depends on the situation:
1. You're trying to make a compound - in which case nothing happens, the mixture just sits there because it doesn't have the necessary components for the reaction.
2. You have a compound and rip elements out - depends on the compound, but usually this will result in degredation, possibly via a hazardous reaction.

things fall apart or don't work as well. reactions don't happen or are really slow
