OS = Operating System

It is a piece of system software that basically allows the software on your computer to interface with and control your hardware devices.

Think of the OS as a Sherbert Lollypop. To get to the sherbert center you have to get through the candy outer layer.

Same thing applies to computers. For a piece of software to control a certain device, you have to interface that piece of software with the operating system which, in turn controls the hardware devices.

Hope this was sufficient.
