I have Dell, Toshiba and Compaq. The dell is about the same performance wise, but much easier when changing battery, ram or the hard drive.

Gateway builds some very easy to maintain machines. I've been the PC Support tech for a 'fleet' of nearly 150 of them for the last 6 years, and they hold up very well. Their support service is also excellent- both online and telephone.

When I used to sell computers, I always recommended Toshiba for its sturdiness and longevity. They were rarely returned.

The bottom line is that it is as much up to the kind of user you have as it is what brand. Some people take good care of their machines, and some don't. Even the best laptops succumb to indifferent or klutzy users.
