Two examples that I found most amazing are people keep pressing buttons on road crossing and lifts despite knowing that by pressing more times it will not make it any faster. Any takes on what drives that behavior?

I agree with the two previous answers from argotitan and fats.... pressing a button over and over is definitely a way of making sure that the darn thing is working... and because most people are impatient, it is a sort of stress relieving reaction, because subconsciously you think you are doing your best to hurry things along and get the job done [get the lift to respond, for eg.] - and yes, what else is there to do in a boring passageway or similar, whilst you wait for that [usually] ridiculously slow moving object!!

It's just a matter of assuring oneself. Neurologically, doing the same thing over and over makes neurons connect in the same sequence over and over. Consciously, it's like a stress reliever -when there's nothing better to do, it feels better that whatever's needed to get something done gets taken care of (like pressing a road crossing button to activate a walking sign at an intersection).

It is frustrating waiting to be able o cross the street.I never even thought about it before when I drove. n my town Portlqaand Oregon you are lucky if you maake across without some dum s**t trying to gooo first and hitting you.Same princippaal when you drive and flip ppeeople off or honk..it's all out of frustration right? We have pedestrians get kiled here all thee time.

The real question is why haven't the designers changed the button so that you are not tempted to keep punching it?

The answer to your question is simple case of frustration that the light has not changed yet. It is also why people jay walk.

actually i disagree with your examples

i'm sure we all know that electronic switches don't always work first time so pressing several times is simply to confirm that the system has reacted accordingly
