If you are able to, try switching monitors with another computer. If the same thing happens your monitor may be on the blink in which case you should replace it. If it clears up then the problem is with your video card.

The cause is most likely one of two problems. Either the monitor itself is broken, which means it should be junked because nobody fixes them anymore. Why not? Because it's more expensive to repair than to simply replace. The other cause could be that the pin that carries the red signal between the monitor and the computer is bent or broken.

I would suggest disconnecting the monitor cable and looking at the pins on both sides. If you see something bent or broken, then all you'll need is to replace the cable, which is very cheap. Otherwise, I would suggest replacing the monitor.

If you're using a CRT monitor (a television style monitor, not a flat panel) then it seems that one of the three electron guns has died. I second what Caliborn65 says. Try the monitor on another computer, and if the problem remains then your monitor just might be dead. Also...

DON'T LISTEN TO ANYONE WHO POSTS A LINK TO A CLICKBANK PAGE! They're spammers who are getting a commission for every piece of software that you buy from that link. "What's that, you say? Buy? They said it was free software!" Well, they're lying. The programs they're cut-and-paste spamming for have very shady histories and generate tons of false positives to scare you. Then, the software refuses to fix all of the "problems" you have unless you register (pay for, that is) it. I have tested the software they're spamming for on a clean install of Windows and both programs reported hundreds of problems that *don't exist*. They're spammers, they're liars, and they don't deserve your money or attention.

Ok it could be that you dont have a driver installed on your computer. Go to the website of the company which makes the monitor. eg www.hp.com, download the right driver and try again. If that dosnt work try getting it serviced.
