Zombie has the best idea, vote for him.

And I agree with him, formatting is a last resort when all else fails.

I also recommend the following, and YES they are 100% FREE. I have seen those others and wondered if they were Advertising. Lets all remember to report Advertisers and others who don't follow the Community Guidelines.

I use all of the following Free software with Windows XP SP2 and Internet Explorer with MSN toolbar and the pop-up blocker turned on and have never had a single problem with my computer sense Microsoft came out with SP2. (knock on wood.) (And be sure to keep Windows Updated)

The best Anti-virus is: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. (www.grisoft.com)
The Best Spyware defense is: SpyBot Search and Destroy (www.spybot.info)
AND: AdAware SE (www.lavasoft.com)
AND Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.info/kb/)
The best Firewall besides the one that comes with Windows is: Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/co... or just (www.zonelabs.com) and select the FREE version.

These are all FREE and are all that are required. There is no reason to pay for this kind of software, except to give a donation to the writers if you can.
ALL the above programs are recommended and should be run on a regular basis. With some the free versions they must be run manually.

The best way to avoid getting any Malware (virus, Trojan's, spyware, etc) is to practice safe computing. Microsoft and many others have countless articles on the subject of safe computing. (something I think should be taught in schools)

Crazy answers that blame the user for installing software that hijacks. The thing is, Firefox allows a back door that alters the search engine and does not allow the user to correct it. That is not how it is supposed to work. Firefox has allowed hijackers to force the user into one search engine while blocking the ability to change or delete the search engine which the user does not want..

DON'T LISTEN TO ANYONE WHO POSTS A LINK TO A CLICKBANK PAGE! They're spammers who are getting a commission for every piece of software that you buy from that link. "What's that, you say? Buy? They said it was free software!" Well, they're lying. The programs they're cut-and-paste spamming for have very shady histories and generate tons of false positives to scare you. Then, the software refuses to fix all of the "problems" you have unless you register (pay for, that is) it. I have tested the software they're spamming for on a clean install of Windows and both programs reported hundreds of problems that *don't exist*. They're spammers, they're liars, and they don't deserve your money or attention.

For this one, I would honestly go to www.majorgeeks.com and get an account there and post your question in the Spyware forum there. They have a great staff that helps you through the problem until it is solved and it's free! I've used them several times.

Do not listen to pak_megan. There is no need to format your hard drive due to a malware infection.

Go to this address:

http://www.castlecops.com

There you will find step-by-step instructions on how to clean your PC of spyware and adware, in addition to a forum of knowledgeable users who will help you if the automatic cleaners don't work.

download hijack this from here : http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/hijackthis.zip

and don't forget download this tool to detect unwanted start ups:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/startuplist.zip

Remember... browser hijacker takes you to unwanted website(s)... then most probable this unwanted website will plant trojan/spy in your system. checking your startup list by using the tool above lets you clean the unwanted start ups.

Format is the best answer though
