I hear ya! (kidding) This internet abbreviation and anacronym trend drives me crazy. Literacy is already on the decline and this is not helping. Furthermore, often one can't even understand what's being said because people are inventing their own shorthand and expecting others to decipher it. Specifically with the examply you use i'm further mystified by the fact that 'da' is only one character shorter than 'the'. So the time saved is virtually nill. Why don't people capitalize the beginning of their sentences? Don't they realize how ridiculous it looks?

It's not really about "da" vs "the". It's just about slang and "da" is just part of the latest incarnation of slang. From shiznit to groovy to swell, to like totally tubular! Everyone goes through that slang phase and every generation has their version. It's usually not until later in life they realize how ridiculous they usually sound and thus begin to talk "normal" again.

Are there not people from all over the world here on Yahoo! Answers? English isn't the main world language although many in N. America may think so. Not everyone has had the English language education that we get over here.

its further bastardisation of the English language, this time from the need to abbreviate everything, just think how much precious time you could save !

people are not bothered about the ridiculous looks of a word. they are more bothered if the word can communicate their thought as well.
