Pentium D by far. It does have a lower temperature threshold than AMD Athalon, however with the right cooloing system this can be managed. I am running my Pentium D 3.2Ghz processor in a top of the line ASUS motherboard, with Dual Sli graphics etc etc and can overclock it and stay cool with an amazing 4.6Ghz Dual core ouput!
Id like to see AMD do that. Thank You Pentium, Coolermaster and ASUS.

Pentium is probably more cost-effective, but the Athlon generally smokes it across the board. I use AMD exclusively. Google "Pentium vs. Athlon" or some variation of that, and you'll find many benchmark tests and articles to look over.
