If somebody treats openly gay people with the equal dignity and respect as they do straight people, then why do people still call them homophobic if, when asked, they state that they believe homosexuality to wrong because of their religious beliefs?

Becuase they cannot except the fact that we do not believe it's right but won't make jackasses of our selves and march through the gay parade.

Homophobia means fear of, aversion to, or discrimination of homosexuals or homosexuality (definition per wikipedia). So even though somebody treats the gay person with dignity and respect, he still says it is wrong to live such a lifestyle and is in that sense, homophobic.

If you don't openly accept and embrace the lifestyle then you arn't buying into their belief that EVERYONE should accept their lifestyle. It isn't a matter of you accepting them. You must accept the lifestyle too.

It is common to be labled a homophobe if you don't accept the lifestyle. Reguardless of how you treat them as a person.

If such is the case, the term is being misapplied. I disagree completely with you position, but unless you are actively avoiding or discriminating against homosexuals, you are not homophobic.
