It means that you have 256 MB of space in your memory, and only 68 MB are still available because the other 188 are being used by programs, tasks, storage, and whatnot.

This link will give you an idea.

Give someone the answer and they don't really learn, teach them how to find the answer and they will understand it.

My first PC had a total hard drive of 250MB with 32MB of memory for programs. This was a few years after Bill Gates said that no one will every need more than 160k of memory. I think it was Bill. I went out and paid 90$ for a thumb drive (usb drive, data stick) just 2 years ago. Now they have thumb drives that you can buy 3 of them for 90$ that are 1gb in size thats 30$ per gb when 2 years ago I would have had to pay 360$ for just 1gb thumb drive.

68 MB is what's left unused by the system

this means that you have a total of 256 mb or RAM installed in your computer and that windows and any other progams you have running have used up everything but 68mb.....which is not much for anything.Nowadays your computer should have a minimum of 512 mb.That should leave enough for most basic functions to operate normally.
I have 512 and if I want to burn a movie DVD it takes 3 hours but my other computer with 2GB of ram does it in 1 hour.
