it depends on where you are going.

If you are staying within the EU then the Post office will exchange £ for euros and take back unused notes without a charge.

If I'm going outside the EU, usually to Croatia, I take enough Euros to exchange and last for a few days. I then use ATM machines and get charged 1/2% for drawing local currency. 50pence on a £100 is not exhorbitent! You also get the London Exchange Rate by using a British account!

try to avoid exchange agencies, especially in Spain, where the rate is usually below the bank exchange rate and the commission is usually higher than we would pay in the UK.

Hope this helps,

Have a good trip!

First load of about 100$ value if possible from a bank, because they don't cheat you.

If you start to have a feeling for the foreign money, mostly you get a better rate at exchange booths or from privat people. But you should have a calculator with you and check every bank note they give to you and insist that you have to have your time to count and check.

Happened to me in Brazil as well as in Romania, where they have or had banknotes with values of millions that the private persons tried to speed me up in order to disturb and to cheat me.
