Wash down with solution of washing up liquid to clean the liner first then wipe down all of the surfaces with a solution of bi-carbonate of soda and water .
Sometimes a piece of charcoal will assist - BBQ stuff is OK but not the briquettes.
If it is a self defrosting fridge check that the drain at the back and pipe down to the evaporation tray on the top of the compressor is clear and clean.
If the inner foam lining is full of maggots you will not be able to get rid of the smell. This sometimes happens if the fridge has been switched off and the contents go bad!

Thoroughly clean the entire interior with a cloth and a baking soda/ water solution. 1qt.water/1tbs.bakeing soda. After cleaning place a small open container with pure vanilla extract in the ref. section. Imitation vanilla extract will not work. The vanilla adsorbs the odors and gives off a nice odor of it's own. You could also place a few charcoal briquettes wrapped in a paper towel in there and or a box of baking soda. The odor will diminish as the unit cools down to normal operating temperature after cleaning and the added items will usually adsorb most of the unpleasantness.

Best thing to do is take everything out, clean throughly with detol, then place a 'fridge freshener' on one of the shelves... No more bad smells, Just make sure all spills are cleaned up as soon as they are made and put opened food it sealed tubs or cover with clingfilm.

Well, i nicked a pair of wifeys tights, then used the toe as a bag, filled with crushed barbecue charcoal...Great. To remove the smell from the charcoal to re-use, leave your bag of charcoal outside on a warm day. I used the 'bag of charcoal method' when furniture etc in store for a year, no smell in fridge, dishwasher or washing machine. Dont do what I did, and use the charcoal on a barbeque later, piquant or unusual odours!!!!!!

Clean the fridge first and then cut up a fresh lemon and leave it on a plate inside for a day or two. Also you could rub some of the lemon on the inside too.

It works for me.Good Luck
