You 'found out' because you went online and found that the number of registered sex offenders is actually 70% of what you know the town's current population to be? Or you 'found out' because someone told you that statistic... because they read it 'somewhere'?

And I don't really think that there's any leader in any town, city, state that thinks it's 'okay for our children to run away and live on the streets.' BUT, I think they realize that there's really not a whole lot they can do to stop a child from running away, if that's what they decided to do. What do you want your law enforcement/government reps to do? Place collars on your kids? Lock them in your house? What exactly are they supposed to do in order to 100% prevent ANY child from running away? It can't be done.

And the sexual predators? Perhaps the best plan of action is setting up a special educational forum that is shared with ALL children in your town on a regular basis that advises them about the dangers of sexual predators and how they can defend themselves. That way, no matter WHAT they choose to do, or where the sexual predators live, those children will be wiser and more shrewd and know to watch their backs.

And good luck with the discipline law... you're going to have a VERY difficult time with that one because many people are going to scream out against the government telling them how to raise their children... it is a freedom each of us has as an American. To have the government suddenly have the right to present law regarding child-rearing starts to step on some serious liberty issues. Again, good luck with that one.

While any place in Oregon that has anything about 1 2-3% preditor rate is high, you have a seriously uphill battle if you were trying to get a law changed or inacted. Think about it - if 70% of the population was convicted felons, they wouldn't be able to vote but they would certainly be able to prevent any legislation from happening. Peer pressure alone would scare the only people left to vote into submission.

As for kids, do you really want them to live in a place like that? If you care for them as it appears, seriously consider moving someplace else.

The link below is a legal information site for Oregon. It does state that sixteen is the legal age to leave home, however you are still responsible financially for any damage your child may cause through acts of vandalism etc until they reach the age of eighteen. As scary as it might be, you have no recourse, should a child want to leave home after the age of sixteen. You just have to hope that you have taught them to be responsible teens who can recognize the situations that are bound to cause them trouble and have the sense to avoid them. My personal opinion is that a child is not safe whether on the streets or at home with their parents, in a town with that many sexual offenders. If a sexual offender wants to molest your child they will find a way regardless of where the child is living. I would not raise my child in an area like that and would take them as far away from there as I could. Here is the legal information website if you would like to refer to it. http://www.osbar.org/public/legalinfo/1139.htm

The stats you provided seem very high for one area. There is a way to find out how many actually are in your area.
This website might be of interest to you. It is site on all of the registered sexual offenders in the state of Oregon. Several links are included which allows anyone to to get information on the predators in your area ( offences, addresses, etc.). http://www.oregonsatf.org/sex_offenders/ Know where they are and instruct your children to stay away from those addresses. Perhaps the schools could put together an information session emphasizing safety issues etc. to present to the students.

I can thoroughly understand your concern. Good luck to you and I hope this helps.

if you are the parent, pack those kids up and run, drive, fly as fast as you can to the next state. you could try to get that that law changed, from the other state.
