A belly button has no use for you when you are born. But when you were still in your mother's womb, the belly button used to be a sort of "feeding tube." The umbilical cord connected your mother's placenta to your body and delivered nutrients and oxygen for your survival and growth. Once you leave your mother's womb, your lungs start functioning (hopefully) and you start drinking your mothers milk, so there is no more need for an umbilical cord, which is cut at birth. The mark it leaves where it was connected your body is what we call a belly button.

The belly button is the scar left over from when you were attached to your umbilical cord inside your mother's womb.
It is also called an umbilicus.
