You are better off giving one or the other at any particular feeding. The nutrients in human milk are absorbed better if baby isn't getting anything else. But nighttime feedings, in particular, are a good time to just *nurse*! It's so much easier to grab a baby before she/he even starts crying, lie down, and fall back asleep, rather than wake up, get out of bed, go to the kitchen, measure and mix formula, heat it up, go back to the baby (who is *screeching* by now!!), calm baby, give a bottle, go back to the kitchen, put bottle in the sink, fill it with water...I'm exhausted just *writing* it!!

I do one or the other, but dont add breast milk to the formula if that is what you are asking. Sometimes Im too sore to nurse or if Im sleeping my mom will warm up a bottle. My baby was born with jaundice and it took several days for my milk to come in. I talked to the pediatrician in the hospital and he recommended using both breast milk and formula to help with the jaundice. Plus I was having a hard time getting a hang of the breast feeding and getting through the initial pain. While breast feeding is always best, my pediatrician said to offer the breast first and if the baby is still hungry give them formula. The more I breast feed the easier it is becoming.

Check out ivillage.com, its helped answer a lot of my first time mom questions and there are message boards on there as well.

I wouldn't do this.. Everytime you add something to a bottle there is bacterial introduced. Also, formula should be mixed exactly as the instructions read. If you don't mix enough water in, your baby could become dehydrated.

If you mix in to much water, your child will not get enough of the nutrients. There is no standard for mixing breast milk with formula, so I isn't a good idea.

You can, however, breastfeed your child and follow it up with a bottle of formula.

Yes you can. I breast-fed my daughter, but I have worked for years in daycare and have taken care of lots of babies that were on formula or a mix of formula and breastmilk. Just make sure that you mix the formula with water following the directions and then mix that with the breastmilk, don't mix the powder straight into the breastmilk. Some breastmilk is always better than none so those of you telling this woman she shouldn't use formula at all should *uck off, it is a personal choice.

No. For one thing, the formula needs to be activated properly and for another, breast milk cannot mix with anything. I would be very careful - formula should not be played around with. If you want to do this to make the child sleep longer, why dont you try only formula and no breastmilk - pump the breastmilk so that your supply does not dwindel. Good luck!

right it truly is a few thing that *may* help: Drink a million-2 cups (in step with day) of moms Milk Tea by technique of classic Medicinals, and take 2-6 Fenugreek Caps in step with day (counting on how much better milk you pick). if you're having difficulty pumping the milk out.... have you ever tried hand expression? alongside with the herbs to develop furnish, hand expression actual worked much better for me than the breast pump. I were given so much better milk out than with a pump, and it became a lot swifter too. If that doesn't artwork, i'd pay interest to what Granola mom says... do no longer blend both. Have your caregiver provide breastmilk first, and then furnish the formulation. That way he receives each and each and every of the breastmilk. ((in severe circumstances the position I had to furnish formulation (even as he became youthful), I gave similac organic and organic)) EDIT: i love what mystic eye stated about ricemilk. i have not considered this before (my DS is only 7.5 months in spite of the indisputable fact that). It sounds like an truly good concept for an older toddler =)

I work for a pediatricians office and was asked the same question by patients mother. I asked the doctor and she said yes that is fine. we do have parents that do mix. sometimes when you only breast feed and need to supplement with formula, the baby does not like the taste of formula. so mixing sometimes helps them adjust. good luck

You could but why would you? Research suggests that if you alternate the formula and breast milk...it leads to no benefits of breast milk so you might as well just use formula.

My doctor told me that it was just fine. My milk supply was not enough to keep my baby satisfied, and I gave her what I could and the rest was her formula. I did this for the first 4 months, she is now 8 months and just fine. Granted breast milk is better for baby, but your the mom to this little one and you do what you feel is best.

Why would you want to? Breast milk has everything your baby needs... just make sure that he/she suckles long enough for a complete feeding. The composition of your milk changes a few minutes after the feeding begins. If you are pumping, make sure that you pump your breast until it is done expressing so that you get all the different phases.
