I've recently just got back from a trip which took in a number of West African countries, and saw first hand the effects of some of the highest rates of poverty and corruption in the world. However, what I also saw was that they are some of the friendliest and happy people i've ever met, and i've been to quite a few countries around the world. I think this is a direct result of the consumerist, green eyed monster culture that we are all addicted to, and until others can experience 'life on the other side' like I have then I can only see our western culture getting worse and worse. Get this - I am a qualified teacher, and have taught at a number of schools as a supply teacher in 'western' schools. 90% of the time kids walk out of the classroom like it's their right, refuse to work and tell you they are going to tell their parents to complain at the school for them getting a detention. Go to Africa, and kids are desperately trying to break in to schools. What are your thoughts on this? C

I think I am tiredof hearing about poverty & corruption OVERSEAS. What about the poverty & corruption in this country. Before you can help someone you need to help yourself.

What an appetizer! Unfortunately most [not all] people in our culture are numb/desensitized to it! They only think they know what poverty , hunger & coruption are! We have led our pamppered lives so far above the rest of the world that there is a layer of coulds we can't see through. I wish I could still travle, alas my health prevents it! Carry the torch and spread the word! Hopefully your voice won't fall on deaf ears!

I am from the United States of America. I wish the spoiled American kids could see what life could be like if they weren't so fortunate. I wish the African kids could trade places with the American kids and vice-a-versa so the America kids could learn to appreciate what they have and not be so materialistic, self centered, sue-happy, etc.

As a retired teacher, I envy you your great experience in Africa.

I suspect that the reason for the shameful behavior of our kids at home is that, somehow, their parents never quite got around to showing them that gratitude is the correct response to the unbelievable bounty they enjoy every day.

Excellent question.

they are probably happy because they never had it. my father use to get mad at me when i would have this come back to his (what would you do if you had to .... walk to school without shoes....in the snow...) i simply said DAD if we never knew anything else but that, then we would do as you did. I wasn't trying to be a smarty-- but if u never had it,how can you miss it. I for one am grateful for all i have spell check on my computer, cellphones, etc...but when my kids get to be my age i will probably get just as frustrated as my DADDY whom I miss something terrible

Your play on words is impressive. Stanza one in certain. I loved the tactic in this piece of poetry. approach reminds me of a school cooking lesson, the tactic became the instructions for ensuring the recipe became out effectively. Yours became a delectable piece of writing Caz.

I'm glad you had that experience. We are indeed a spoiled nation and look to the wrong things for fulfillment.
