Little Black Book of Stories by A S Byatt. Three main reasons why I say this:
1. Good stories: amazing range of topics from the on-going theater that we call human life
2. Good story telling: Simple but perceptive, real life blended nicely with myth and legends
3. Good pace: Short enough to keep you enthralled and long enough to keep you satisfied.

Good book for a summer month..

I just finished Saving Faith by David Baldacci and loved it. It's similar to a lot of modern books though: there is some conspiracy, someone is killed or threatened, and the main characters are on the run. Baldacci is a good enough writer imho though that you wouldn't know that it's essentially the same story.
