i bought an A-power 1.8" usb drive enclosure and put in my 20gb toshiba mk2004gal and plugged the wires in to the pc. i hear the sound as if something got plugged in and the pc says "found new hardware>USB TO IDE> USB Mass Storage Device." Its stays there for a few seconds and then i hear the sounds as if something was unplugged from the pc and it says "A Problem occured during installation. the device may not work properly blah blah blah." So i unplug it goto the "device manager>universal serial bus" and plug it back in. It pops up in the list and i goto properties and it says "no drivers are installed for this device." The cd that came with the drive only has windows 98 drivers because supposedly XP doenst need them. I have download many drivers from many different sites and i have made no progress. I read in another thread that it might be cause o the drive letter but when its plugged in for the few seconds that windows detects it, there is no other drive shown under disk management. If anyone can help feel free to do so. Here are the specs of my pc just incase it helps.

It is correct that XP doesn't generally need drivers for USB enclosures. Drivers for a USB enclosure will not activate unless the drive is installed properly. Make sure the drive you have installed in the enclosure is jumpered for Master and the wires are plugged in properly.

You need to set the jumper settings on the hard drive to MASTER
It will not work untill you do.

Also make sure you always use the "Safely Remove Hardware" each time before you unplug the device, otherwise you could damage your 20gig drive

after putting the hard disk interior the enclosure, it is going to act an exterior tension. sure you are able to take what you want off of it and format it. sure you will get the excellent get admission to to all of the area. yet another notice: some courses won't permit you pass to the different pc they are uniquely deploy to the different pc. after formatting the tension you may desire to have all 320gb or quite near to it.

sometimes drive enclosures wont work if there proprietary. check to see if your drive is proprietary if so then that is the man cause to why your drive is not showing. it also helps if you try the enclosure on another computer.

Soak it in alcohol for 45 minutes then light on fire. That should fix it.
