Get OpenOffice Calc, which is free and reads XLS files.

It really doesn't matter how old your laptop is. So long as you have Windows, any version installed, you can open an Excel XLS file. Why? Because that's the standard extension for Excel, and has been since day 1.

For example, I can open an Excel 2003 file in Excel 97. The real problem you seem to have is that you either don't have Excel on your machine or you can't simply click on the file and open it directly.

To fix the problem of not having Excel at all, all you'll need to do is go on the Internet and download the Microsoft Excel Viewer, which is free and can be obtained by visiting the Microsoft website download section. This will give you the ability to open and look at the file, but you CANNOT update or change it's contents.

If you have Excel but can't open the file by double-clicking on it, you can always open Excel first and then open the file from within Excel. FYI, if your version of Excel is older than the one that created the file, there may be some incompatibilities in terms of advanced features, fonts, etc. But you should see the contents and formulas OK.

This also applies to files created on a Mac but viewed on a PC, and vice-verse. They're basically the same and are compatible with each other.

Actually you need an 'Excel Viewer', too many of them available on the net, check out yourself and see which works on your system. Microsoft also offers ' Excel Viewer', check it out :D

These are small utilities and you do not need to install the whole package.
