I am interested in changing my full legal name in order to protect my family from a very cold and callous ex-hubby who has threatened us on several occasions. There has been a restraining order, but the police do very little to uphold it and I live in fear on a daily basis, so I have decided to change our whole identity and move to another state.

I am a single mom of 3 small children with not a whole lot of money to spend. I hear name changes are very expensive, but I am very interested in learning the following:

*What steps and procedures are involved?
*How much will it cost me?
*How long does it take to complete the changes?
*What forms of ID are needed?
*Will I have to hire an attorney?
*How do I switch over my new name to my Social Security Card and will I need some form of court documentation for proof of the change?

Thanks to everyone in advance for your help. Your valuable time and support in this matter is extremely appreciative and I am deeply honored.

There is a cheap way. Call the courthouse and ask for the records clerk. You can just change your last name by going in and having it done on your own. If you go through all of the legal channels, it will cost a mint. There are ways of beating the system. Please do this today. Get yourself and children to safety.

Those are great questions to ask an attorney. While this service isn't free it is inexpensive I think. Call and ask those questions and find out the answers. Have phone calls or letters written on your behalf. And have the form or documents you will need reviewed by an attorney all for (in my state) $17 a month with no long term contract. I love this service.

I suggest that you do a search on the internet for "legal name change" it will give you over 120,000 sites that have that info.
It's a legal procedure.
Do you have full custody of your children and the ex-hubby has no rights at all, not even visitation?
Because you in some states you have to leave notice in the paper in which your ex-hubby might read saying that you are changing your name.

Talk to an attorney. If you cannot afford one go to Women's Resource Center. They have pro bono legal aid available.

First you should go on line and discuss your potential name change with 300 million strangers. Then just go ahead and publish it in the same format. DOLT!

"A soft answer turns away wrath." Proverbs 15:1
Be gentle with the man, as much as it is possible, and isolate him, in as much IS possible. But, if you change the family identity, don't you think that he can go to Court Records and find that out?
I wouldn't do that name change thingy!! Pray for healing, and it will come.
