I'm planning to study at the uni of melbourne next year and would like to know what it's like there. Also, as you can guess, money is an issue and i'd like to know more about the cost of living there and way of life in melbourne.

Also, what is it like in melbourne in general?
Weather-wise?
Is it easy to get a job as an undergrad?
What kind of jobs are usually available and what's the pay range?
What can one do for entertainment in melbourne and does it come cheap?
What do students usually do during the summer holidays or the mid-semsmtral breaks?
Anything in particular that any australians can recommend for an international student coming over to study?

thanks.

Melbourne is very culturally diverse. NOt sure what nationality u are- but in some suburbs, u may come across racial discrimination to some extent.

Melbourne is very cosmopolitan, takes pride in coffee culture, sporting venues, entertainment, nightlife, arts, restaurants, wildlife, numerous corporate head offices, good transport network etc. & many uni's to choose from!

Weather- winter (now) is cold about 2deg Celcius at nite, 13 during the day and Summer can get to 42deg Max.

Job hunt is positive for undergrads, depending on the discipline u study- employment rate within 6mths of graduation is about 85-90%. Some disciplines like civil engineering is 98.9%!
Because there are many head offices here, graduate employment rates are high. There's alot of work in cafe's as waiters, in retail, call centres etc for part time employment. It's not always easy though, I have heard some ppl being unemployed for a long time.

Grad pay starts from AUS$34 000. Dentistry takes out the first place at abt AUS$60 000. Business streams get about $35-45 000. Engineering abit more. Would help if u mentioned what u study.

Melbourne is cheaper to live in than Sydney-
I'm not sure what sort of entertainment info u seek but i can tell u about the uni life.
There's heaps of uni nites and social events where u can meet uni drinking buddies. Many of the pubs around the city (5mins from Melb uni) on thursday nites have UNI nites with cheap drinks. Many also have student special prices.E.g. $3 student pots, happy hr etc

I'll tell u something i've noticed with uni- it's very segregated. I'm studying a business stream and there's heaps of group work where we have to befriend classmates etc- but none of us actually meet up during breaks- we have our own high school friends or friends from outside of uni. I'v also talked to ppl from other uni's that study other things but cos they don't have group work, they didn't really even have close friends they hung out with outside uni hrs!!!
International students tend to stick to themselves and speak their own language, go back to their home countries during breaks and dont' really associate with locals vice versa. That's mostly with the Asian students though...although many swedish students still seem to find other swedish and hang out speaking their own language..... (I go to RMIT, let's hope Melb uni is different for ur sake!)

I think if you wanna experience the real aussie experience- join uni groups and hang out with locals. I suggest going on day tours on holidays.

the weather ranges from 2 deg c in winter at night to 45deg c at midday in summer

you will need at least AU$200 a week for accomodation and food

there are plenty of casual jobs around if you know where to look but the pay is bad

entertainment is varied as melbourne is a large city - some is free

Melbourne is a great city - it has been consistantly rated as the World's most liveable city.
The weather is inconsistent. It is known for having 4 seasons in one day.
Entertainment is ample - sports events, pubs and clubs, concerts aplenty.
Not much in terms of great beaches - do some travelling to other parts of the country/state.
In terms of employment, that depends on what you are studying.
Have fun.

Melbourne is a very expensive place to live. It is great though just expensive.
Adelaide is the number one city in Australia for students and it is considerably cheaper to live here too. Adelaide is a great place to live and less crowded too.
