It is a mathematical consequence of these assumptions

1) All inertial reference frames are equivalent (inertial means not accelerating)
2) The Laws of Physics are the same in each such frame
3) The speed of light is constant

The third is the one Einstein added to the previous Principle of Relativity. He did so because very convincing evidence came out that could easily be explained by adding that assumption.

It has been verified by a ridiculous number of experiments and atom bombs wouldn't work if E = MC2 weren't at least very close to being accurate.

To dispel a myth I see popping up in some of the other responses, NO scientific theory will EVER be proven right or wrong. This is more or less a criterion for a theory to be considered a scientific theory. Theories can be verified (shown not to break down) by experiments, but NOT proven.

Also, no real scientist will actually say what you posed in the question unless they don't have any idea what they are talking about.

time and time again, Einstein's genius has been experimentally proven. Some of the effects of his theories are just today being proven in particle accelerators. E=mC2 (energy = mass x speed of light squared) was proven experimentally by the United States' use of nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of world war 2.

This is the relationship between energy and matter. It is from the theory that produces this result that we have operating knowledge of the nucleus of an atom, enough to generate energy from it. Given that we accept the Specific Theory of Relativity, as numerous experiments have given a high confidence in its applicability, then by extension, the equation has been verified.

Yes it has been verified. The atomic bomb of course is the most famous "experiment" that verifies it. Any working nuclear reactor verifies it. And countless other experiments in labs all over the world have verified it. It is one of the best tested and verified theories of modern times.

Yes it was verified first in the Nevada desert, then a couple more times over the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Does it really matter? Even if it's wrong, it's going to take a lot of work to change everyone's prior knowledge. I'm sure the governemnt knows a bunch of major mistakes already but are just too lazy to inform anyone or change any minds...

This has been mathematically proven. Scientists love to find fault with others work, as doing so and then proving it extends their own esteem.
