Suppression of the truth has always been a high priority for American governments on both sides of politics.
The public as seen by American political parties are only the way in which a government maintains its power.
Perhaps while at school you should learn the truths of your government as well as its triumphs. If citizens educated themselves on there rights and there real power to change the world around us, I'm sure citizens could get a little bit more out of there votes. It's simple make them earn your vote.

Because we the people stopped voting. A "big" turnout is 35% of registered voters...and only a little over half of the people of legal age to vote are registered. This means that politicians are elected by a very small portion of the American people...and they know that. So all they have to do is keep the small minority satisfied and they are free to screw the rest of the people. How do you think the idiot Bush got elected twice? It wasn't because he is doing a good job or is even competent...it's because right now the Republicans do a better job of getting their minority to the polls. Hard to believe that a national election is decided by a couple of hundred thousand people in a country of 300 million!

It is because both parties have to go begging large corporations, unions and special interest groups for millions of dollars in campaign contributions every four years. That makes them obligated to them instead of us. There have been a lot of crooked politicians in the past and a few great ones.
By the way, it's Megan's Law.

Because we the people have let them get away with it. When it doesn't affect us, we don't complain. The only time we gripe is when it's something that hits us as individuals close to home.
Very few people out there are active in helping other people's causes, even if the fight isn't their own. Example: Gay Marriage.
How many times have you written your congressperson/people to tell them what you think or try to sway them to vote a certain way for the betterment of our citizens?

They all died. Now it's about money etc...until/unless voters hold their feet to the fire to return to a higher ethical standard. I'd love to see the national debt abolished, but that means a majority of citizens taking issue with their representatives and making it happen....
