Eat turkey (high in tryptophan) before bed and take vitamin
B12 (methylcobalamine is best) and melatonin (a hormone that
regulates the sleep cycle, among other functions). Melatonin (3–5
mg) should be taken in the afternoon for best results.

Drink a strong decoction (tea) of valerian root, skullcap, kava kava herb, and chamomile. Most insomnia is caused by caffeine. If you say, “I don’t drink coffee,’ be aware that caffeine is in soft drinks, even non-cola drinks, dark chocolate, and many over-the-counter drugs.

Also be aware that some experts believe that aspartame causes
insomnia, so that diet cola you’re drinking may pose a double risk
for insomnia (and myriad other health problems).

Make noncaffeinated teas your new drink of choice. If you need
an afternoon “pick-me-up” drink while at work, drink a cup of ginseng tea, rather than coffee. Then, in the evening, drink relaxing teas such as chamomile.

Also, remember that emotional disorders, such as anxiety and
depression, can cause insomnia.

Taking power naps, 15–30 minutes in the midday is very helpful
if your schedule allows.

Get a sleep number bed......
Well really it all depends on your life and what medications that you are using. For starters you make sure you eat a decent meal earlier in the end of the day, like between 4-6pm. Also make sure that you exercise early in the day, noonish. Back to the night time you start to relax around 8pm and do you best not to do anything except read a book, play a slow thinking game or do crosswords, till you get sleepy. Try to get in the bed at about 9:30pm-11pm. This will not work right off the bat, but over time you will train your body to rest, and you will overcome insomnia.

I used melatonin. Can buy it at the drug store in the herbs/vitamins section. It is a pill, but melatonin already occurs naturally in your body. No icky drug hangover and I only took it a couple times before I could sleep normally again.

You may be able to use some herbal teas such as "sleepy time tea extra" by celestial seasonings. It works really well for me. You steep it and drink it about an hour before you want to sleep and it will help you drift off. Don't use sugar though, honey will do better.

Get some exercise
I took melatonin when I was in college.
Don't toss and turn. If you can't sleep get out of bed. Get your body to think the bed means sleep (and sex of course) tossing and turning will only bring about more tossing and turning.

You will eventually realize what is preventing you from going to sleep, in case you don't know already.. When you get to that point, all you have to do is prevent it from taking place. There are many methods to accomplish this little feat.
