Having two just seems to create a lot of problems.

The answer is: First we have more than one sex, because of evolutionary matters. Having only one sex means lesser variability, because the mutations occuring depend on accidental mutations and cant combine very good. When you have two sexes and the procrate, two different mutations can combine, fastening evolution. And why we have not mor than two? Tis is a mater of gen distribution. As you may know we have 46 Chromosomes and for creating a new human a male and a female cell combine those. To get a normal 46 Chromosome cell these have to be splitt, exactly into halfs again. Now immagine ther were three sets of chromosomes. It is much harder to split things into thirds than halfs. Because splitting in half is a one step process an splitting in thrids or fourth ans so on would take more steps, which would mean more energy usage. And since in cells everything depends on low energy usage splitting in half is the best way. Of course ther could be the possibility of a breading gender without distribution of chromosomes it would just be the gender were the cells or emryos are injected. But that is probably also not easy to manage, because it would mean that 3 different genders would have to meet in order to procreate, which could for example be a problem during a time when humanity was small and widly spread over the planet.

There are a few critters on the planet that are hermaphroditic, male and female in one organism and able to procreate alone. But there are only a few. From the proliferation of life based on two sexes, it seems to me that Nature and the Creator found that life is more easily propagated through two. Also, two-sex propagation diversifies the gene pool and allows for species with more adaptability and less specialization. Specialization causes species to die out rapidly when their specific conditions change beyond the specific needs of the organism. Generalization, adaptability, allows for more flexibility concerning all kinds of factors, including food and environment. This increases the odds of a species continuing survival.

As to the last sentence of your question, if there is only one sex, it can't procreate with any other. There would be just the one sex and no other available for propagation, or procreation.

LeAnne,
I think it is because the One who made us, programmed us for family life. Very few people who grow up outside of what you might call a loving family, ever reach their full potential. We really do need to have a strong, loving father, and a nurturing mother. I know many "experts" say that is not so, but as I look around me, I see a great many things that tell me they are wrong.

Why not procreate with yourself? Amoebas do it, and they never have to dress up or impress anyone.
