Go to a fashion school like FIDM here in Los Angeles. However, since design school can run you up to $40k a year, it may not be super wise choice unless there's some way for you to pay for it. Another route is to go to a city college and there's lots of fashion classes you can take that will probably only cost you approximately $80 per class. You NEED to know how to sew to be in the fashion business. Then after you're ready to actually start designing for money, get a business license, get a seller's permit in the county where you will be doing business in so you can get your materials and tools for wholesale prices, and open a boutique or open an online store first if you're strapped for money. It's a good start with no large overhead for you to worry about so you can spend all your time on thinking up of GREAT, NEW designs! Good luck!

The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.
I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.
Associations may be a good avenue to explore as well. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.
Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:
* Fashion Artist: Drawing Techniques to Portfolio Presentation by Sandra Burke
* The Fashion Designer Survival Guide: An Insider's Look at Starting and Running Your Own Fashion Business by Mary Gehlhar
* The Business of Fashion: Designing, Manufacturing, and Marketing by Leslie Davis Burns
* Fashion for Profit (Revised Edition with Retail Chapter) by Frances Harder
There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.
Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

Watch the MTV show "The Hills". Lauren, the main character, is going to a fashion design school & she's interning at a major fashion magazine. Learn the ropes FIRST, and apply to a great school! The gal who posted before me...that's the name of the school. Rock on!

Try to get an internship at a fashion house or company so that you can see the buisness from the ground up, that's if your errands aren't limited to making runs to starbucks....But first you have to make an impression!

It depends on where you want to end up. Do you want to work for someone else and not get credit for your designs? If you want to design and sell your own clothes, then doing it yourself is the way to go now days. Jump in and get going.
If you're a writer, then write, if you're a singer, sing, if you're a designer, then design and sell, sell, sell baby.

FIDM in Los Angeles (Fashion Institute) would be a great place to start. My friend went there and just loved it.

if you have designs or images, you're best off getting a small quantity printed up at a local screen printer so that you have something to present to people that might be interested. myspace.com is also a good place to network yourself and your merchandise.
