Snakes are harmless unless you run across a rattlesnake, and they are harmless too, until THEY FEEL like you are going to attack them. I used to raise boas and rattlers. I only got bit twice, both times by the boa when he was hungry. Never by a rattler. They, the rattlers only strike after warning, which is when that are shaking their rattlers, boas bite when you pick them up wrong, or if you scare them while handling. There's no reason to be scared down here in So Cal about running at night, at least where snakes are concerned, but take a flash light with you, and shine it in front of you, almost all snakes will hide long before you get anywhere near them. Most people who are bitten by venemous snakes (or any other kind of snake) in the United States are bitten on the hand.
You get three guesses as to what the people were doing when they were bit. Incidentally, the majority of snakebite victims are also young and male. They frequently have high blood alcohol levels. So please don't down a few beers and then go around trying to grab the poor critter.
What did the snake look like? If it was something timid, like a corn snake, you're unlikely to be bitten even if you carry the snake around with you, no matter how wild it is. Other snakes have much shorter tempers.
I hope you recover from your fright. Most species of snakies are quite docile and some make terrific pets.

don't be such a ninny... snake bites do actually hurt though... assuming it's not like a huge anaconda or burmese python or something venemous which hurt REALLY BAD... like screaming, pass out, and possibly die bad, snake bites are a little painful... pinch yourself really hard except imagine that your pinching yourself with short little needles and that's a snake bite for you... the constrictors can be worse because their teeth are longer and if you jerk away it can tear your skin enough to need stitches.
snakes are not like fluffy cuddly kittens or puppies... even as tamed pets snakes may still strike and bite occasionally.... nevertheless there are good techniques for getting them used to handling and reducing your chances of being bitten, which ultimately is more stressful for your pet than you. some kinds of snakes like cornsnakes and hognose snakes are prized for their tameness and very rare propensity to bite... but it can still happen. I once picked up a kingsnake off the side of the road and was doing fine with it, even had it near my face. And this girl, a friend of mine wanted to try it. It was like the snake could sense her nervousness though because even though I had been holding it for almost five minutes at that point almost as soon as she took it from me it clamped down on her arm. Thankfully she didn't freak out and it was just a minor scrape with a few red dots where the snake's small teeth had punctured her arm. It was a really big king snake too and must have hurt chomping down, pinching and twisting on her arm the way it was. I don't know... supposedly women have a higher threshold for pain.

quite a few people get bit yearly by venomous snakes. Mostly from grabing or stepping on them. Rattlers do give warning and most will run away but copperheads will hide and wait on the backside of logs and such. They actually won't run away most of the time and do strike out alot if disturbed. Cottonmouths are notorious for falling into boats from brush or tree's. Don't worry though they won't like seek you out.

If it is not a rattlesnake there is not much to be concerned about. Even rattlesnakes are not just going to attack you out of the blue..most people bitten by rattlesnakes are bitten because they harass them or pick them up. They will usually give you a rattle before they strike...so if you ever hear that...give them their space and get out of there.

Snakebite is pretty rare. Snakes don't like people very much and run away. Well, crawl away.
In Mexico, a more rural country than ours, more people die from scorpion stings.
