I have worked with Japanese people and have serviced their tours. They are very shy and communal with an insular society. One of the most misunderstood aspects about their culture is how on the surface it seems to have adapted to Western culture but underneath they are still very traditional.
We are talking about a civilization isolated from foreign influence for almost five thousand years. Their language is beautiful and completely different. They have also been subjected to some of the worst forms of racism. They are very nice and polite once you get to know them but they have tight bonds with each other, so you must give them time.

I was stationed in Japan for 10 1/2 years. That was 3 tours over there. I made friends from day 1. I learned to speak Japanese, and that was a plus. It made them feel that I was interested in their culture, which I was. Not saying you have to learn their language, but if you did you would have a lot of Japanese friends. Even if you didn't learn Japanese, get to know them. I think if you did, you would have many Japanese friends.

Japanese are very arrogant and rude. Just coz Japan is far advanced in technology, they feel the rest of the countries are nothing...hence the attitude. But if you are a friend and a guest of a Japanese, no one can beat their hospitality.

This is new to me.
I've always had atleast a couple of friends from Asia.
Maybe, it's not because they're from Asia, so much as the ones you've met, are just not that chummy or friendly.
I have always found that they make for GREAT friends, They can be SOOO loyal.
They, like anyone else, have their own personalities.
It sounds to me like you just didn't meet any nice ones.
Their not ALL that way. Trust me.

for ten points I'm willing to bet you're trying to become friends with a cute jap girl that you like. the guys are cool to become friends. the girls will shy away from the guys because they are from another culture but not another planet. they know what you're after.
if you're trying to be friends with old school jap then that's hard to do they stick to their own. but jap's that grew up here are just like any other person here.
