Learn the "Herd" mentality...

DONT follow the herd!! Lead by example. If you see a problem..solve it. if you see a need...Try and give TO it.

Keep to yourself that which is yours...Give to the herd what is the herds..but keep to your what is yours.

trust No One...except yourself.

trust that in the final analysis..your the only being that should matter to you. After all..when its your time..no one else is going to be stepping up to that plate. Enjoy life...and all it has to offer.

I'll assume your question pertains to leadership, not strangeness (standing out due to negative differences).

To stand out among the group, one must posess a shared likeness of the majority in that group. They (the majority) must recognize this individual as one who posesses what they lack, be it connections, language, acute skills, popularity, generosity, cunning, intelligence, etc... The leader must be well-liked and like-minded for the particular group. We wouldn't want a military leader who is not cunning. We would, however want a military leader who is very intelligent, perceptive, and experienced. Conversely, a group of steel workers have little use for someone who is a highly-skilled guitarist. Simply put, it's context-sensitive, and only applies to that particular group.

If you're wanting to know how to identify this groups needs/wants, perhaps a better-worded question is in order.
