It is just a matter of perspective. Some homes are good and some are not so good. In some places they are abused and you may never hear about it. You have to ask a lot of questions and look for the signs. Most states have regulatory agencies as well. Those agencies usually keep records. But let's face facts ... nursing home work is dreadful. It attracts really good people who want to be there and really bad people who have 36 convictions, need a job to satisfy their parole board and may have serious anger management issues. A nursing home may refuse to hire the bad types go broke get bought out by a money only minded company and then in six months be filled with bad people. The turn over is incredible so even if you do happen on nursing home nirvana it could have a totally different staff in a year.

It is definately not something that you want to do. But there are very bad cases where say it is a single mom with an elderly relative that has advanced dementia or is disabled and there may be no choice. If that is the case, make sure they are going to be visited (a lot). Partly because loneliness is a drag and old people get really lonely. Also, so you can keep watch and make sure things are as they should be with the staff. Be advised that when you put someone in a home, they lose themselves kind of quickly. Sometimes just being at home and having a purpose can keep people going. Taking that away can have bad consequences. So really, unless it is necessary... putting someone in a home is just not a good thing.
