IF YOU HAVE AOL - you get a free firewall included in the Mc Afee ANTI-VIRUS security system that is included in the newest version (get the free disc it is faster- or you can download the latest version) - 9.0 SECURITY EDITION . it is made for you to use the firewall and set it up for the security checks as often as you want ... I have had very good use with it ... no viruses- and you get a pop up in right lower corner asking if you want to allow a program or site you use new - or you can pre-set it and include the programs you know are safe and not problematic ... the computer check up is handy as well - I use it weekly . I USE THE ANTI-VIRUS CHECK EVERYDAY ..BUT SOME SAY IT ISN;T NECESSARY .. I HAD NORTON WHICH I PAID FOR A FEW YRS AGO AND I ENDED UP WITH SEVERAL VIRUSES .. COST ME $130 TO GET REPAIRED..... ALL IS FREE WITH THE AOL MEMBERSHIP// HOPE YOU CAN USE IT WHERE YOU ARE ... GOOD LUCK ...... LL
in addition -- if you have WINDOWS XP - THERE IS A FIREWALL THERE .. BUT YOU SHOULD NOT RUN IT ALONG WITH THE AOL FIREWALL - THEY WILL COUNTER -ACT EACH OTHER AND YOU'LL KEEP GETTING WARNINGS... I TRUST THE McAFEE VERSION THE BEST .. BUT IT DOES REQUIRE YOU HAVE AOL .....HOPEFULLY YOU DO.... GOOD
LUCK ............ LL

Zone Alarm.
And I recomment all of the folowing be installed and run.
The best Anti-virus is: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. (www.grisoft.com)
The Best Spyware defense is: SpyBot Search and Destroy (www.spybot.info)
AND: AdAware SE (www.lavasoft.com)
AND Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.info/kb/)
The best Firewall besides the one that comes with Windows is: Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/co... or just (www.zonelabs.com) and select the FREE version.
These are all FREE and are all that are required. There is no reason to pay for this kind of software, except to give a donation to the writers if you can.
ALL the above programs are recommended and should be run on a regular basis. With some the free versions they must be run manually.
The best way to avoid getting any Malware (virus, Trojan's, spyware, etc) is to practice safe computing. Microsoft and many others have countless articles on the subject of safe computing. (something I think should be taught in schools)

ZoneAlarm is considered the best free one, generally. I have it and love it. At work we have Kerio firewall (it has a free trial version which expires after 30 days, after which some of the functionality is removed, but mostly it's still there and is still excellent.
I would not rely on the Windows XP Firewall (the one that comes with XP SP2), as it only blocks incoming traffic and doesn't bother with outgoing traffic at all.

To be honest, firewalls arn't necessary. They do stop some hackers, but if most get past your modem, then a simple firewall won't help much. I would go with the windows default since it is easy to work with. Zone Alarm is used way to much meaning that it isn't as secure as some of the others out there...remember, you get what you pay for. You pay nothing, you get nothing worth having. Pay $20 and get one from your local Wal-mart...easy, secure, and effective...

Windows XP Service Pack 2 comes with his own firewall, if you have it you don't need any firewall.
But if you still want a free firewall try this one:

Zone Alarm is good if you are looking for freeware. You can get it here:
http://www.download.com/sort/3150-10435_4-0-1-4.html?
There are others but ZA is really the most used and popular. This is not to say that there are no other options, however I have never had to look for an alternative as I have been using this for 3 years without a complaint.

I wouldn't suggest Zonealarm since there are problems with the new version. Try Sygate or Comodo, they're free. I am using Kerio which won't be free after 30 days (oops). So I'll probably get Sygate after the trial..but i really like Kerio!!!!
